Our 2022 Lake Ontario Season Racap
Our season started on the last Saturday of April with an awesome Brown Trout bite that lasted for weeks. Day after day we caught lots of nice big football shaped browns. Sizes ranged from 4- 10 lbs. Many full limits of Browns were pulled in by our lucky anglers. As the season marched on we experienced some the best brown fishing for years. That will continue to be the case for years to come as the state seems to have gotten there act together on stocking after failing to correctly stock browns and salmon during COVID.
Our lake trout fishing was also some of the best we ever experienced. We caught many that were complete monsters over 30lbs and several are headed to the taxidermist. That's quite an honor for a lake trout. Limit catches were the norm day after day. We fished for lakers between the brown fishing right into early July when salmon started to show up.
We started to fish for salmon in early July when the summer wind machine kicked up. It seemed every time the fish concentrated, the wind blew them all apart. The weather right until the end of September was a mess to say the least. We caught hundreds of salmon and had decent fishing most days. Unfortunately, we never really got the salmon blood bathes we like and limit catches were rare. Between the failed stocking efforts during COVID and reduced stocking numbers put in place to keep the baitfish from being cleaned out of the lake it was tough fishing.
On the stocking subject we did witness the state have bird gunners on site to prevent any bird consumption of the fingerlings. This should definitely make a difference going forward and we look forward to picking up where we left of in late April 2023.
These are just a few of the great catches anglers have enjoyed while fishing on Midway. I want to thank all and express our appreciation to our wonderful clients because without you we couldn’t be in the business we so love. We are already looking forward to an even better 2023 together! Capt. James W Fetterhoff Sr.
